Flood Alert in force: Groundwater flooding in the Candovers and Old Alresford.
Flooding is possible for: Areas at risk of groundwater flooding in Preston Candover, Chilton Candover, Brown Candover and Old Alresford in Hampshire.
Be prepared.
Groundwater levels are high and rising. Since Tuesday 27/02/2024, the level at Preston Candover has risen by 12cm. At Old Alresford, it has risen by 24cm. Cellar flooding is expected to be affecting a larger number of properties in the Candovers and Northington, and a small number of properties in Old Alresford. Internal ground floor flooding to isolated properties in Old Alresford is expected imminently. Septic tanks will be struggling to operate effectively. Further heavy and persistent rainfall is expected to affect Hampshire over the next 5 days, with up to 40mm of rain possible. Groundwater levels are expected to continue rising for at least another week in Old Alresford, and another 2 weeks in Preston Candover. Internal ground floor flooding could occur in Preston Candover in the coming weeks if heavy rainfall continues to affect the area. We continue to monitor the levels and forecast. If you have pumps to help reduce water levels, please ensure that they are operating. This Flood Alert will be updated by 18:00 on Thursday 07/03/2024.

* Businesses should inform staff and customers about the situation.
* Check that you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies.
* In rural locations, farmers should consider moving livestock and equipment away from areas likely to flood.
